The Internet has been nominated for a Noble peace prize. Like John would have certainly said: "all we are saying is give Internet a chance".
A heated debate took place last year whether o nor Barack Obama deserved to receive the Noble prize. Everyone talked about it, more than ever. No one had particularly cared for an award that, besides the name, hasn't granted peace for a lot of people in a society filled with contradictions, were wars prevailed over cultural and religious intolerance, neighboring disputes, long past scars, abstract enemies, financial and economical interests, not to mention the very same industry that lives off of making more sophisticated war toys to fill in an over saturated supply market that has an absurd potential of destroying several times our own planet: talk about a waste of time, money and energy. Hunger, poverty, wealth and social inequality: wars we are all loosing, but some are suffering more intensely.
The media took a field trip with last years Nobel Prize. The BBC viewed the American media in this way. In Spain, 444 (nice number!) people commented at the Público.es newspaper this news, which they valued as a 3 star rank. The reaction from the media unleashed a debate fair enough for the press rooms, the blogs, or the coffee shops, kitchens and dinner tables.
So if the Nobel prize was awarded on the intentions rather than achievements, what was to follow? Why not the Internet? So they went ahead and did it at Internet for peace. Why? Because we have a new potential, not yet fully developed, and still bear with such complex problems that we must try to solve somehow. We need the social emergence of the system, as what we'd been trying till now has proved that it's not enough. Those great expectations of the web are still to develop, but we must surely start to build the highways for the future, regardless of our own foes, fears and stability that derives from our own history that has taken us to this comfortable status quo. It's just not enough.
I believe in the collective creations. I believe in the individual, making a difference in the local level, where complex systems are affected. I believe we must try it. I believe we, the people, is all of us. Uno.
Now, lets make it happen. Not just the Nobel Prize, but the actual social emergence that can be more that the sum of the parts, aligned in common collective goal to surpass our challenges. We can change the world, so lets do it.
